Professor Long R Jiao is a professor and consultant in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery at Hammersmith Hospital, having studied in medicine at the Royal London Hospital Medical College and trained at the former Royal Postograduate Medical School, Guy's and St Thomas' and King College Hospitals. He is the chair of pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery at Hammersmith Hospital. He is one of the regional programme directors for surgical training and an intercollegiate examiner for both MRCS and FRCS for the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh.He has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers in journals such as Annals of Surgery, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Hepatology and Lancet. He is a regular contributor to JAMA Surgery and other surgical journals. He published the 1st article on radiofrequency in liver cancer in the UK which has been cited worldwide. His main research interests include surgical technology and cancer biology, and early detection for pancreatic cancer. He has set up a minimum invasive unit at Hammersmith Hospital for hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) diseases, performing Whipple's operation and major liver resection laparoscopically as routine. He is the first to perform Robotic Whipple's operation in the UK, having established the 1st Robotic HPB centre in London. He has developed a broad clinical and laboratory program encompassing gold standards in operative procedure as well as genomic and proteomics research. His currnet research forcus is on new biomarkers for early detection of pancreatic cancer and recurrent disease after curative pancreatic resection for cancer. His ambition is to improve the survival of pancreatic cancer.
