Xin-Yuan Guan, Ph.D., is a Professor of Basic Research Department, Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, and a Professor of Department of Clinical Oncology, The University of Hong Kong. He got his PhD degree in 1993 at the University of Arizona. After postdoctoral training at the University of Michigan, he was recruited by National Human Genome Research Institute in NIH as a Senior Staff Fellow. He was appointed as Head of Microdissection Technology Unit in NHGRI from 1994-1999. He joined the Department of Clinical Oncology, the University of Hong Kong in 1999 as an Associate Professor and promoted as Professor in 2007. He was elected as Director of Centre for Cancer Research, the University of Hong Kong in 2013. His major scientific contributions include: (1) development and application of Micro-FISH technique in cancer research; (2) identification and characterization of novel oncogenes, such as AIB1, EIF5A2, and CHD1L in various cancers; and (3) identification and characterization of cancer stem cells in hepatocellular and esophageal carcinomas. He has published more than 230 peer-reviewed papers in international journals including in Science, Nature Genetics, Nature Medicine, Cell Stem Cell, PNAS, JCI, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Gut and Cancer Research.
